Octopus Bowl

I created this bowl by first throwing a bowl on a wheel, then I hand-sculpted the octopus inside the bowl. I rolled out clay into strands and laid them out to mimic the arms of an octopus inside the bowl. I had already sculpted the octopus' head, so I attached it to the arms with a slip-and-score technique. Then I cut out a section of the octopus and hollowed it out. I started this project because I wanted to create a piece that utilized both throwing on a wheel and hand-sculpting techniques. I wanted to challenge myself to create a larger bowl than I had before on the wheel. I decided to make an octopus inside the bowl because I thought the arms would create an interesting shape while wrapping around the edge of the bowl. I used a brown and grey glaze combination for the bowl. For the octopus, I used a light purple with red spots.
