Orthographic Pepper Drawings and Patterns

Date

July 2022

I started this project with some orthographic drawings of a pepper. Then I decided to experiment with different patterns and design elements using one of the pepper cross sections. I tried: packing (filling in the space with the pepper design without overlap), radiating (the pepper design moving outward in a circular pattern from a central point), folding (drawing the pepper design as if it was folded in half), and branching (two pepper designs branching out of a singular primary design). I liked the look of the pattern created by using branching, so I used this technique again on a larger piece of vellum. The design started with a single cross section shape but quickly turned to chaos as the peppers multiplied. I decided to trace the second branching drawing again and use hatching to fill in the negative space. This created a design that looked very organic and biological.
